Yoga for the Creative Kind

Yoga for the Creative Kind
If you take my in-person or online Super Yoga Vinyasa class on Saturdays, you have seen my husband, film director Josh David Jordan taking the class. The reason is twofold. At 46, he's intentionally pursuing a life of longevity, living long, living well, and feeling good. Secondly, yoga helps him tap into the conduit of creativity as he's in preproduction for his second feature film and working on a third script.

If you're looking for a way to stimulate your creativity, yoga may be the answer. Yoga has long been recognized as a tool for promoting physical and mental health, but it can also be used to spark creativity. A recent study found that people who did yoga were more creative than those who didn't. So if you're an artist or creative type, consider giving yoga a try. It just might help you tap into your inner muses.

The connection between yoga and creativity

Exploring somatic movement through yoga can ignite creative expression not just in the physical body, but also in the mental and emotional realms. By learning how to be still and mindful with ourselves, like making space while we fearlessly take on dimensions of our own self-development, we can lengthen those neural pathways that often act as conduits for creation. It tends to be easy to forget that creativity isn't just limited to the painter's brush or a musician's instrument; it lives within us all. Yoga reminds us of this, so let's explore how somatic movement created on the mat is an empowering tool for self-expression and connection.

The benefits of yoga for creative people

Yoga is a fantastic tool for creative people, providing inspiration, helping tap into new ideas, and encouraging mental fortitude and patience for the creative process. Practicing yoga regularly helps increase your capacity to remain focused and inspired when it comes to your creative pursuits. It gives you the ability to remain clear with your thoughts and steady with your craft, allowing these qualities to infuse both your life and work. By pursuing yoga you'll find yourself more energized and inspired by life in general, allowing creativity to take center stage within you!

How to overcome creative blocks with yoga

Yoga can help us break through creative blocks and trust the creative process, allowing us to trust that when we trust ourselves and stay consistent over time with our practice, results will follow. Whether you're a novice or seasoned yogi, it's important to understand that yoga is not just a physical practice, but also mental and spiritual. And just as there's no one-size-fits all when it comes to physical posture, there's no one-stop-shop solution for releasing the blocks that keep us from creating freely. That said, yoga can be incredibly helpful in forming a connection between mind, body and breath to overcome frustrations or doubts associated with creativity. By focusing on approachable postures and cultivating trust that our efforts will yield results—it's possible to open up space for creativity through regular yoga practice. Get ready to explore yourself more deeply; trust the process!

If you're creative, chances are you've been told to "just do yoga" at some point in your life. And while there's no shortage of people who will tell you that yoga is the answer to all of your problems, there is some research to support the claim that yoga can benefit creative people. In this blog post, we looked at the connection between yoga and creativity, the benefits of yoga for creative people, the best yoga poses for creativity, and how to overcome creative blocks with yoga. So if you're feeling stuck creatively, give Yoga a try— it just might help jumpstart your flow.
