"I remember the first time I heard about flow state. My teacher said it was a state of 'optimal experience' and that it's something we can all access through certain activities.
I was intrigued, but it wasn't until I experienced it for myself that I truly understood what she meant. Flow state is often described as a feeling of being 'in the zone' or 'in the moment.' It's a state of total absorption in an activity where you lose track of time and space.
The legendary record producer Rick Rubin just came out with a book about this. I highly recommend it.
Flow state is associated with various creative activities like painting, writing, dancing, and even yoga. But it can really be accessed through anything that allows you to focus completely on the present moment.
If you're looking to find your flow state this week, here are five ways to do just that..."
Set an intention for your practice. What do you hope to achieve through yoga this week?
Take a moment to assess where you’re at and set an intention for your yoga practice this week. What inspiration do you seek? Is there a particular insight, clarity, or focus that you desire to nurture? In answering these questions, take the time to honor your journey and design the ideal environment in which inspiration may dwell. By setting an intention each day before diving into your practice, you will be cultivating creative motivation that can truly drive your experience.
Create a space that is conducive to creativity. This could be a corner of your room that is tidy and inspiring, or it could be outside in nature.
Creating a special space for creativity is key to unlocking creative flow. Why not make it beautiful, too? Invest in beauty to encourage inspiration. Beeswax candles, an essential oil diffuser ( this one is my fave ) with grounding and clarifying oils like frankincense and peppermint, and fresh flowers or plants; these simple touches have the power to evoke a sense of beauty within a given space that is conducive to creativity. Designing an area that encourages mindful presence and helps diffuse inner mental clutter allows us to connect with a more natural, inspired mode of being. Beauty is contagious; we don’t need much else - just deep breaths and an open heart - to lead us back to our creative source.
Experiment with different types of yoga practices. Try something new that you haven't done before, or go deeper into a style that you're already familiar with.
You can explore the different types of yoga classes I offer, be it Super Yoga Vinyasa, Super Gentle, and Ashtanga; all are great ways to open up your creative potential. Give yourself permission to try out something new this week that you haven't done before or go even deeper into one type of practice you may already be familiar with. You could find your own flow state by taking time to experience the creative flows of a Super Yoga Vinyasa or find a gentle practice for calming your mind. Maybe leaning into an Ashtanga approach will help you cultivate strength and a focused meditative state as you link postures and breath in a structured sequence. Reinventing yourself daily through exploring various practices helps open up the possibilities of how creativity can flow through us all.
Be patient with yourself. The creative process can often be messy and unpredictable, so allow yourself the freedom to explore without judgment.
As we journey into creativity, we have to trust the process, no matter how messy or unpredictable it may seem at first. If it feels like a wild labyrinth that you can't find your way out of, don't worry. Take your time, be patient with yourself and encourage yourself to relax into this exploration. Allow yourself the freedom to explore without judgment - and try yoga as a way to drop deeper into a flow state and discover the inspiration that lies within. Try one of these five tips this week and watch your creativity soar!
